Really, all you need is a network to connect it to in order to stream the 
video. Most of the Slingboxes require a direct Ethernet connection, but I used 
an Ethernet bridge without too much trouble. Yes, you can use it with a 
recorder (I assume you mean a Tivo or other DVR) and no, it doesn't matter if 
the TV is HD compatible, the Slingbox doesn't really interact with the TV. 
Also, keep in mind that while some Slingboxes can handle HD signals, generally 
the bandwidth can't handle that much data and it's not going to make that much, 
if any, difference in the picture quality you get while using it. If you just 
have a single input device you want to control the Slingbox Solo is probably 
going to do the job just fine.
