The Google apps calendar works well for us because my wife has her own, I
have mine, and we share each others. Makes it easy for me to see what she's
got scheduled with the kids (she's a stay-at-home mom and does a lot of
activities during the day), and she can see... well, hmm... I guess it's
more of an advantage for me than it is for her :)
For contacts, I agree that the type-ahead in the gmail interface is great,
but we need decent comprehensive contact manager. names, phone numbers,
addresses, birthdays, etc.

I looked into the apps that Robert and Dana mentioned, but I'm a bit leery
to give out login info to a 3rd party app. Installed Outlook 2007
yesterday, and to be honest, it's pretty cool. I've managed to get it to
read in both my wife's google calendar as well as mine... and it will even
do an overlay view. However, I can't seem to get the iphone to sync with
those. As far as I can tell, it will only sync with the 'main' Outlook
calendar. Not what Outlook refers to as "Other" calendars.

Google's got a sync tool that will sync a google calendar to the main
Outlook calendar, but only a single calendar, so I'd lose the functionality
of being able to get my wife's calendar synched up with the phone.

So, as of right now... just using Outlook in conjunction with the iPhone for
contacts. Outlook is essentially the backup in case the phone accidentally
gets put into a blender. Still don't have a good solution in place (that
doesn't involve a third party) for calendar tho.
