Oh and the other is widely viewed a huge mistake.

If I'm understanding Robert's point it's that American values are not
compatible with national security.  In other words, the American
experiment doesn't work.

Is that your point?

Because American values, laws, and its system of justice either work
in peace and in war or they've failed.
