People are not spending because they are scared out of their minds about the
economy. And what is the President doing about it? Making it worse! The
Democratic strategy right now is to scare the public into accepting whatever
they want to do.

Scare tactics worked with the TARP (partly because the very real possibility
of the banking system failing), but the execution of the TARP was such a
screwed up mess that the public is now highly skeptical of whether Congress
will help or just piss away a lot of money. Support for the stimulus is
dropping as people see the pork-fest for what it really is.
