The bible also says that God "separated the waters from the waters" before
he "collected" the waters to reveal the dry land of the Earth. Science
finds no evidence of the Earth being formed within a liquid water medium.
Genesis also clearly states that God made the Sun and Moon (and all the
stars) after the Earth - in fact after he made plants (and not just plants,
but seed and fruit bearing plants).
It's hard to imagine a time when science would consider the Earth the
predecessor of the Sun or entertain the idea that fruit-bearing trees
existed before the Sun.
On the fourth day he created all the creatures of the Sea and the Birds
while on the fifth he created the creatures of the land ("Cattle and
creeping things"). Evolutionary, biological and taxonomic Sciences simply
don't work in a world where birds evolved before all other land animals or
where plants and animals didn't arise in parallel.
The relative length of days as given in the bible is the least of our
problems! The list I've given is far from the only concerns raised in
Genesis alone... and let's remember that I never left the very first page of
the Bible! Things don't get simpler to reconcile as we move on.
Either you compromise religion and consider this story a pleasant myth with
no real basis in truth or you compromise science and ignore huge, accepted
swaths of evidence.
Again, I'm not - ever - saying that individuals cannot reconcile faith and
science. I'm arguing, stridently, that the success of those individuals
cannot reasonably be held up as a solution to the clashes between religion
(codified faith) and science that are going on today and have gone on for
centuries.
