I think the real reason is it is contained. There is little chance of it spreading.
We are most interested when we have skin in the game. See Germany, Russia, China, East Timor. This is neither new nor shocking. If we all _did_ actually care about all of these horrible issues, we would all be huddled in our shacks cowering against the dark.
