I think its because we see devout Muslims threatening to cut the heads off cartoon artists. Because we see protests over the tiniest thing turn into an orgy of hate. Because when you examine Muslim terrorists, you don't find religious slackers. You get a description of "he was getting more into his religion". Not all Muslims, whether devout or not, are terrorists but just about all Muslim terrorists are devout.
What bothers me however is the way we are making "devout Muslim" equal > "prone to violence."
