Both. Nothing we did with the participants were not test out on ourselves. The hypnotic pain control methods, sticking your hand in ice water for a minute (we'd only let participants go for about 20 seconds), and the all the other methods and procedures we would undergo first before applying it to the research participants. Here's how it would work. We'd ask students to participate in a hypnosis study in which a questionnaire would also be administered. After that initial assessment session all participants were invited back for a more involved hypnosis assessment session. From those participants we'd select a rectangular distribution - equal numbers of high, medium and low responsive individuals. We'd invite those people back for the pain control study. We would explain the intent of the study, what would be done etc. The subjects were quite aware what was involved. All participants would receive several exposures to the pain stimulus, one with hypnotic analgesia instructions, hypnosis plus relaxation instructions and no hypnosis/no instructions. That's the basic paradigm we used for this research. There was individual informed consent at each stage in which the participant was fully informed of the study. While there was some discomfort inflicted on the person (actually after about 10 seconds or so it can get excruciating), they know they can stop the administration at any time. They also are fully aware that they can withdraw from the study at any point.
