I know.  GM's problem is graphed right here - operating margin since 1959.

Ups & downs, good calls and bad, the overall trend most clearly
reflects one thing: GM management cutting good short term deal at the
expense of the long term.

When you do that, it catches up.

In 2009, they finally got caught.

(ps - remember corporate boards?  They were supposed to look out for
that long term ... wonder what happened to them?)
