the term "first lady" was actually coined during the administration of our first and only bachelor president....I forget which one.....Buchanan maybe?? He had a relative....niece I believe...attend to the white house duties that the president's wife usually took care of. Since they didn't really know what to call her, they started calling her the "first lady".
