If McCain had been against warrantless wire tapping, I might have
considered voting for him instead of Obama. As it was, they both held
the same opinion and so that was no way to differentiate. I had to
base my vote on other issues where they differed.

I agree with that. I said, back before the election, the thing I
feared would be the worst legacy of the Bush administration is the
increasingly unchecked power of a unitary executive. It started with
Patriot Act, moved through crony appointments to the judiciary and
then burrowing operatives into the DOJ by changing political appointee
positions into career positions. Add in a legislative branch that got
used to being cowed by "national security" arguments and that is a
recipe for power I don't want anyone to have. Not Bush. Not McCain.
Not Obama.
