Never really got into Racing Games but I do love "Burnout Paradise"... it's
downloadable (so "pick and up and play" is a bit easier and only $20) and
one of the best supported game out there. MANY free downloadable
extensions, many optional (paid) and new modes (like the upcoming "Cops and
Robbers" which looks like a blast).
Unfortunately there's no true "two-player" (split-screen) mode for it - what
they do have is the paid "Party-pack", a $10 add-in that coordinates
multi-player, pass-the-controller challenges for up to eight players. It's
not a very good "game night" experience since you're mostly spectating, but
it's a great "get together" mode since people don't have to be focused
completely on the TV.
The best games for casual multi-player (more than two players) all seem to
come from the PSN but there are some good Disc games.
"Little Big Planet" is the absolute, hands-down best multi-player game...
ever! Up to four players (mix of online and couch), hundreds of thousands
of levels, and some of the most creative gameplay ever. Some people
discount it as a "kids game" but that's an enormous mistake. NOBODY has
even seen this game without smiling.
"High Velocity Bowling" is a blast (especially if you invest in the extra
characters - there's something satisfying about watching a midget beat a
lesbian at bowling).
"Calling All Cars" has zero-depth but as a sometimes-game it's a great time
(and I think it's down to $5) - up to four player split screen and matches
take only a few minutes each. It's essentially a frenetic game of
basketball or hockey in flavor, but with cars and destruction.
"Pain" is a fun single-player party game (it's just fun to watch) in its own
right, but the recent patch adds some great multi-player modes ("Darts" and
"Fortress"). It's immature but a hell of a lot of a fun.
"Buzz" is a great game for non-gamers and there's tons of question packs
(plus unlimited user-generated quizzes).
"SingStar" is the classic drunk party game... we have it but don't drink and
rarely have friends so it doesn't get much use, but I can definitely
recommend it if you're into that kind of thing.
For two-on-a-couch gameplay (in addition to all of the above):
"Warhawk" is online-only, but does allow two-on-a-couch gameplay. I've
never played myself, but I've got friends that swear by it. VERY deep game,
multiple modes (on foot, ground and air artillery) and huge battles.
"Resistance" and "Resistance 2" both support split-screen coop online.
There is no coop in the main campaign for R2, but the dedicated coop mode is
my favorite mode of any shooter. You and up to seven people (2 on a couch,
6 online) take on hordes of Chimera. The main campaign in R1 is coop-able.
All of the "Lego" games support coop as well and all of them are great fun
("Star Wars" is better than "Batman" and that's better than "Indiana
Jones"). Maybe not suited for an "adult" get-together, but my son and I
love them.
I'm not sure if it's going to support local-multiplayer (I think it is) but
the game I'm most waiting for here is "Fat Princess" - it looks to have the
accessibility and depth coupled with the outright, laugh-out-loud fun that
many games fail to put together.
