I like MobiPocket (both the reader software - available for many, many
devices - and the bookstore), but there are a huge number of free books out
there if you're willing to forgo "recent".

Of course there's tons of free "literature" out there, but also a huge
amount of "modern pulp" (Edgar Rice Burroughs, H.G. Wells, Edgar Allan Poe,
etc). Get some culture, why dontcha?!

If you're willing to experiment (and willing to put up with the occasional
mis-filed slash fic) you can also access more fan-fiction and amateur
writing than you'd be able to read in ten life-times.

There's also tons of currently copyrighted material out there from various
sources, but even without that material the sheer breadth and depth of
what's available is staggering. Still only a drop in the bucket of what's
available in print, but it also includes a huge amount of quality material
only available electronically.
