I can't get rid of exchange in this case the way they use its features, law
firm.. but they have tons of spam and the barracuda subscription isn't
working very well.. so I suggested trying to link exchange to gmail for
incoming mail.

Well, that sucks.  I went through this same thing trying to get
Exchange to be a useful server product for my company but in the end I
gave up.

every company is different and people have different reasons for
making the decisions they do but now I sit and watch people get
frustrated by Exchange like I did and just shake my head.
