Well, CamChi's right, that's how it works over the Ocean - no radar. Also I've heard that the electrical problems message came in via ACARS ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACARS ), meaning automated. Which means that something catastrophic probably happened that brought the aircraft down instantly. The ACARS message may even have been sent while the a/c was in free fall.
