Vivvy, radar coverage won't do crap for safety. If you want to get on
a bandwagon, go for something in the gray area; something that's NOT
mandated as minimum equipment, but WOULD increase safety.

A GREAT example is smoke detectors in the crawl spaces. Take the
Swissair flight 111crash. The TSB said that:

"Aircraft certification standards for material flammability were
inadequate in that they allowed the use of materials that could be
ignited and sustain or propagate fire. Consequently, flammable
material propagated a fire that started above the ceiling on the right
side of the cockpit near the cockpit rear wall. The fire spread and
intensified rapidly to the extent that it degraded aircraft systems
and the cockpit environment, and ultimately led to the loss of control
of the aircraft."

Now I'm not sure about all of the particulars here, but I do know that
there were A LOT of "ADs" issued (airworthiness directives), but I
think they were all related to in-flight entertainment (IFE),
insulation, and wiring. In other words, all related to preventing the
fires in the first place.

What still isn't required to my knowledge is smoke detectors in the
crawl spaces so that pilots would be warned of smoke and/or a fire.

Seems like a no-brainer to me, yet for some reason they're still not installed.
