I switched to a laptop in 1998 - bought a Sony Vaio for an obscene amount of money - used it for eight years, so it more than paid for itself. Bought an HP DV5000 in 2006 which was wonderful until my housemate dropped it. The company just bought me a new HP dv7 with 17 inch screen. I occasionally consider a desktop box for the studio, but so far I can't convince myself of any reason not to stay with a laptop.
Currently I have CF8, PHP, MYSQL, MS-SQL, Oracle 11, DreamWeaver, Eclipse, Protools LE and about 30 other music and video editing apps running on this one. They all co-exist quite well.
