Speaking of anecdotes ...

I just read a story yesterday about a lawyer who all of sudden got
tinnitus and it drove him nuts; couldn't sleep etc.

Doctors performed all kinds of tests, MRIs, MROs, MRUs, MOUSE all
fine, 'you have tinnitus, live with it'. The whooshing sound is
driving him nuts.

He finds another doc a long drive away and the doc sticks a
stethoscope to his ear. Nobody else had thought to do that. He hears
the sound. Uh oh.

Turns out the guy had taken some meds for a stomach condition and
threw up violently. During one of these bouts he hyper extended his
neck and pinched his jugular which had pooled blood in his ear cavity
which, it turns out, sudden onset tinnitus is a classic symptom of.

Good news: we can fix your tinnitus. Bad news: you're lucky you
didn't have a stroke and die, and fixing this is going to be tricky.

Luckily they stented his neck and he's better now.

Scary.
