My wife has Vitiligo. I first noticed it when she was 19, she had a very small white dot just below her lip. Over about the next 5 years, more and more patches formed and grew until they eventually ALL grew together. She now has some small patches of pigment left that look like freckles but other then those she is pigment free.
When she was all blotchy with white spots she was embarrassed (she is selfish that way) and always wore long pants and long sleeve shirts, which in Tampa summers was quite a burden. Now that it has taken over her entire body, aside from looking very pale, she looks normal and is comfortable enough to wear short sleave shirts and shorts again. However, because of the lack of pigment, she cannot be in the sun for more then a few minutes without getting burned (much like with MJ's weird umbrella fascination).
