But... there are situations where merit and perseverance get you nowhere. I
have seen some. You make it sound like that is all that is ever needed and
sorry, this is not so.

I do agree, I think, that affirmative action should be a temporary solution.
My dad has stories of his relatives being told not to bother to apply for
certain positions. Granted, that was not in the US, but perhaps we can note
that my father was refused entry to the US as just generally too poor and
undesirable. He spent three days on a bridge between the US and Canada
before the Canadians gave him a sandwich and let him in. We can look back on
on a long career as a foreign correspondant in Europe and Asia and say how
stupid, but it did happened, and for those who are unsure here, the
ethnicity is the Irish from Scotland. No affirmative action at work there.

But how many other people could have done as much or more if the fifties had
been a little less white-bread, hmm? And I personally can tell you that yes,
there is discrimination out there. Yes it can be overcome, but we would all
be more productive if that energy was spent on ... something productive.
