Just got a note from a friend in Canada and his impression. I think
its very telling:

"That's my feeling that he actually got elected without being a nut job

The thing is he has been conciliatory and open to working with other
countries. Bush was not, in fact Bush moved the doomsday clock forward
more than anyone since the missile crisis...

Also, the thing that it seems that the US under Bush didn't seem to
notice is that the rest of the world neither wants nor needs US
leadership, resents US interference and attempts at control (moreso in
trade than in any other area (hell they still owe us 5 billion in
illegally collected fines)), etc, etc

Yeah, a president that is not a nutjob is a big thing outside the US.
That he got it should be a wake up call to how the US is perceived
outside its own border. But like many wake up calls, the US is too
sleepy"

Remember this is not my attitude, rather that of an engineer in
Canada. Still its very telling.
