In 1948 (the year that Ghandi died) they declined to give out the
award because there wasn't someone alive that they wanted to give it
to, so there would be precedent. However, I do think that there are
people who have been working for peace for a long time who could be
recognized. How about Bill and Melinda Gates for their work through
the Gates Foundation in improving basic living conditions in
developing countries? How about recognizing Mercy Corps for their
frontline work doing disaster relief and training? I think this year
(or last year) they finally were able to give over control of efforts
in Bosnia to a local organization they helped found and nurture after
the war and saw it turned into a very capable domestic organization
aimed at improving lives there. Lots of options out there that they
could have gone to. I like Obama alright and I think he's done some
decent things but the most deserving this year? Nah.
