Now I know we are talking about a pocket/swiss army knife situation.

From the earlier "camping utensil" description I was thinking about
what I used to have which was a light-weight, aluminum fork, spoon and
butter knife that would fasten together. That knife had a rounded tip,
was barely stronger then a plastic knife and less dangerous then a
sharpened pencil.

This pocket knife is at least pointy so I would say it might be equally
dangerous with those Ticonderoga weapons of mass destruction that
proliferate our school systems.

I still argue the appropriate response to this would be a confiscation
of the tool by school authorities. Only return the tool to a parent
with an reinforcement of the rules explaining why it should not have
come to school and that there will be more sever consequences in the
future if it comes to school again. And possibly a detention for the
student if he was belligerent about surrendering the tool or other
extenuating circumstances warrant additional punishment.

That is still zero-tolerance. The school did not tolerate the knife
being at the school. But it is also an example of an appropriate response.
