Ion propulsion in it's current form doesn't generate enough thrust to
achieve anything approaching escape velocity. However in space the thrust
increases exponentially.

I'm not sure if NASA has even ventured into plasma rockets..

You would have hoped by now we would be using some sort of ion/plasma burn
super rockets but...in time :-)
