Yes, they are. It's how the next mission to mars will take place. And they
say it will take 1/3rd the time to reach mars based on this plasma rocket.

This was in Tuesdays New York Times. I don't have a link, but it was in the
science section.

They launch a rocket, then the vessel orbits earth for a bit, then the
plasma rockets keep it propelling to mars or something like that.
