I don't know the rule on what status you can file.

But I do know that is has no relation to your w-2.  You an put whatever 
you want on a w-2.  All that does is determine how much of each pay 
check is reserved to cover your tax bill.  What you have actually done 
by not changing this earlier is possible not reserved enough to cover 
your actual tax bill and thus you may have to pay more out of pocket 
when you file your taxes.

But this would of course depend on many other factors involving your taxes.
