Recently I sold an item on Craigslist. One of the respondents to the ad was someone who wanted me to take down the item, he would give me an additional $50 for doing so, and would mail me the money by UPS. Someone would be by to pick up the furniture item. All I had to do was send him my address. And, yes, I was to call him also at some strange area code. As the item did not sell at first, I reposted it again, and once again the person wrote back saying that he "needed" this item. A person could want this item, but no one would ever "need" this item. That was my first clue. Plus he never called me, and I had my phone number listed. Turns out the area code was somewhere in the Dominican Republic, the call would have cost me over $2000, ATT would have been able to do nothing about it, as they would have been the conduit for the billing. Think of it as similar to the cost per minute to call a p-o-r-n site, but much more expensive. I was in communication with Craig, of Craiglsist, and he said it was indeed a scam, but unless they use the anonymizer address in responding back and forth they can't block the address. Plus they would no doubt us another address. Just letting you all know about this because it looked real tempting to the casual observer, but I did not trust him and never called.
