I, personally, find 17 and 18" screens to be way too big. I've got a 15.6" HP that I just bought. This is an inexpensive, not best in breed, interim notebook. It is fine, all in all, but I had a Dell Latitude X1 12.1" previously and that was a nice little machine. I love light laptops and I just feel like the huge screens are too awkward, personally.
A lot of it depends on what you want. I'd like something in the 14 or 15 inch range with a dual processor and at least 4 GB of ram and weighing no more than 5 lbs. On the other hand, you can pick up some monster quad core (8 virtual cores) laptops with 6 or 8 gigs of RAM and a 1 GB video card. So what do you want to use it for?
