Since so many folks responded, I'll respond to Erika's message and reply to everyone.
First off, the salary.... The reason I was given for a salary offer at the low end of the range (~10% below my last salary) was that I lacked the experience with financial systems. I did, however, have enough development experience for them to be interested. Because of the company and the chance they are taking on me, I would feel guilty to leave them. But guilt never stopped me from doing what I needed to do before. The main reason I am interested in the job is to be able to interface CF and AS/400 systems better. I had to rely on another programmer to help me with this on a previous job and I reallized that I needed this skill. If any interviewer asks, that will be my answer. Finally. Unemployment really sucks! My wife is driving me crazy to find a job. But the good news is the offer and another interview later in the week. I'm going to talk to my wife tonight and explain to her my reservations about the job. Maybe I'll have an offer before then. Thanks for the advice everyone. BUT There are advantages to taking an opportunity like this ... There are still a lot of companies who are still integrating their AS/400 backend to web front ends ... So in my opinion, the experience is worth it. My partner is an RPG-AS/400 guy, and has had some great contracts with JDEdwards and Merck ... Mu one concern is why it is less money than a CF job ... Takes just as much, if not more knowledge, and it's a specialization these days. People aren't going to school to be RPG programmers anymore .... ? Just my .02 .. :) Good luck!!!!
