Other good choices: Uncle Tom's Cabin, Gone with the Wind (in spite
of the Hollywood hype around the movie, the book is excellent), and
the John Jakes trilogy North and South, which was made into a
mini-series and is available on DVD as well.

I'm a huge fan of history and historical novels. I've read so many
about the civil war it's hard to remember them all. Surprisingly,
considering my lineage, the novel I am writing about the Georgia
colony does not cover the civil war as it ends with the ratification
of the Bill of Rights in 1791. Which leaves room for a sequel I
guess, if I ever decide I do want cover that time.
