Nearly any recovery tool would have needed to been installed before it was stolen to be effective and traceable. Even with those tools there isn't any guarantee of recovery, but they can at least wipe the data to prevent identity theft and access to e-mail accounts and whatever other stored passwords might be on there. It's unfortunate that people feel the need to mess with other people's stuff.
