you can spoof a MAC address but it's not trivial. Now... supposing
they find they do have this information -- see previous discussion of
how unlikely that is -- it might possibly help prove that a given
laptop is in fact their stolen laptop. It won't help them find it.

Hey, if they bought the laptops new, Apple may be able to tell them
the MAC address. They will know some stuff about the network card
anyway, that would perhaps possibly give a range. I do not know but it
might be worth asking. Depending on how small a town this is happening
in, it might then be worth checking with pawnshops and keeping an eye
on Craigslist and checking out any laptops that are newly for sale.
