When I was in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisms...a medieval
historical society), I used to do a lot of heavy armored combat (real armor,
rattan and foam padded weapons, real fighting), one of the best fighters I
ever fought against was a guy who had only 1 leg. In the SCA, titles of
nobility are mostly won through combat. This guy was a Baron of the group
he was in...that he won by his own hand. Very incredible guy.

Subject: Re: Mass. woman with no arms preparing for black belt

I was training for my 2nd Dan up unitl three months ago, when I blew
out my left knee.. and other things got in the way..

Black Belt testing is supposed to be a bit subjective, based on the
individual abilities of the student being tested, obviously the
instructor is making allowances for her situation.. I am by no means
discounting her achievement, it took me eight years to reach first
dan, and I have full use of all of my faculties (shut up Larry, Cam,
Scott etc..). To even attempt it with missing limbs is a feat in it
self.

I competed up unitl my 1st Dan, I used to come up against a gentleman
who was missing his right arm, he was one of the most difficult people
to spar I'd ever seen, because his blocking methods were very
unorthodox, the obvious choice would be to attack his right side, but
he'd developed the ability to twist, quickly and block from the left
side. It drove me nuts, but I always gave him huge props for not
letting his situation get the better of him..

She's probably done the same thing, you can adapt poomsae (forms)
especially the Taeguek and Palgwe sets, in her case just discount the
hand motions and blocking.. I'd love to see how she's adapted to full
contact sparring...

Kudos to her for being able to do it. And in just three years to. That's the
bare minimum required time to get your black belt in TKD, which means she's
worked her butt off and tested (and passed) as soon as she was allowed with
every belt along the way.
