That's not entirely true.  While that definitely used to be the case, in
many states, the laws have been revamped to make it even.  The ones that
have more rights are the custodial parents.  Non-custodial parents have a
lot of rights stripped away.

AFAIK once kids are involved the woman automagically has more rights than
the man in the relationship.

i.e. even if she moved into HIS house, she can put HIM out.
He may even lose his house to her because of the child/ren

I'm not sure that marriage actually helps in these situations except if
there is a Pre Nup involved.
Where the woman is concerned, Married, not married...once there are kids and
they've been living
together for some time...

under normal circumstances : she's got more rights.
