Wasn't that called a PDA? Hehehe

I think the straight PDA's went the way of the dodo bird when they
successfully merged the pda and the phone.

If you are looking for something like a smartphone, I would assume a netbook
would be to large.

You may just have to bite the bullet. I would highly recommend the Android
based phones...particularly the Droid.

You will definitely be paying for more, but I don't know of any of the cell
companies that offer a device without a phone that has data access offhand.
I know the iPod Touch and maybe some of the other ipods (eww) allow data
access, but I am not sure how those work.

I googled PDA and got this:
http://www.google.com/products?hl=&q=pda&rlz=1B3GGLL_enUS372US372&um=1&ie=UT
F-8&ei=BJT1S6C6KIz8NcLDpIQI&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&v
ed=0CFQQrQQwAg

YMMV on these...they all look like old tech...

Subject: "Smart Phone" without the phone.

I've was just mulling over some things I kind of would like to do
electronically while out and about. I am just beginning the feel a
slight pull of some type of hand-held mobile computing device. But I
really don't want it to be a phone. I have little need for a mobile
phone. I have used the one I currently own 50 minutes in the nearly
four months since January 29th. I really love my pre-paid phone plan
that allows me to have only paid $3.125 per month to date this year even
if I do pay $0.25 per minute to talk.

But there are some things I imagine I would like to do with a networked
system in my hands. Not really comunicating with others. E-mail,
texting, social network updates, etc are at the bottom of the list for
me. What I am looking for is photos, GPS, note (text, audio, video)
taking, information look-up, maps, banking, financial tracking, and
others I can't name yet.

I presume from the Apple world, I might be thinking of the IPod and|or
maybe the IPad (if I wanted a larger format). What other devices might
be in this niche? Would a netbook fit this role well? My wife has an
HP Mini, and I'm not sure that is a good form factor for the uses I am
imagining.

What type of data plans are out there that don't require a lot of money
per month for more data then I am likely use. Preferably contract
free. I already have wi-fi in many places I would be either from my DSL
provider and|or other open/free wi-fi hot spots. So I suspect I would
not need a lot of coverage beyond that, if any, would I?

Are any of you non-phone smart phone users out there? If so what has
worked well for you?
