We used to have a congressman in Georgia named Larry McDonald who left the John Birch Society because they weren't conservative enough. Surprisingly, he was Democrat. He was also rabidly anti-Soviet, with his fear of them justified when he died on Korean Flight 007, shot down by Soviets.
