You seem to imply that the politicians received some kind of special treatment from the IRS. I see no proof of that.
If your accountant made an error, and you paid the taxes and penalties when you became aware of the error as these politicians did, the IRS would take your check and that would be the end of it. The IRS makes payment concessions to average citizens everyday, including some who are criminally negligent. They usually only prosecute deliberate fraud, like the Leona Helmsley case.
