I would have thought the Eastern and Central European percentages would have
been higher with places like Chicago having the largest Polish and
Lithuanian populations in a single city...even larger than in their home
countries and also the high number of those of Germanic decent, especially
in the upper Midwest. Intersting.

Where do you get that number. The vast majority of people are
descended from more recent immigrants from around 1880 through 1910.

The best I could find is this reference
http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-64644389.html that estimates 35
million. I have my suspicions on this number, mainly because it does
not take into account endogamy or exogamy (marrying inside or outside
one's particular group). Nor does it take into account those who died
without descendants.

That said, I found this reference from wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maps_of_American_ancestries

An analysis of Census information and immigration records would
suggest that 62 percent of white Americans today are of British Isles
descent, and a total of 86 percent are of Northwestern European
origins. Approximately 14 percent of U.S. whites are of southern and
eastern European ancestry.

religous stick of their collective butt that the British, a people famous
for buttsticks, kicked them out. I forget the exact percentage, but I think
it's in the 70s. At any rate we carry many traditions and cultural values to
this day from the Pilgrims.
