"Cuba's not one of the poorest nations in the world".

It's not exactly an economic powerhouse.

The common international poverty
line<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poverty_threshold>has in the past
been roughly $1 a day. In 2008, the World Bank came out with
a revised figure of $1.25 at 2005 purchasing-power parity
(PPP).[<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poverty_threshold#cite_note-nb-2>

Average monthly salary in Cuba: $18<http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2886.htm>

Hmm. That's about half of the international poverty line. To you, it might
not be poor. To me, it looks poor.

"And volleyball? I think that's a stretch. I've never heard of an
international volleyball contest. In fact I've never heard of an
international baseball contest either.
Certainly not one that brings countries together on any scale even close to
world cup."

You ever heard of this sporting event called the Olympics? It's this
sporting event that is held every four years. It has all of these weird
sports like baseball and volleyball. It even has soccer. It's usually a
big deal.

There is also an event called the World Baseball
Classic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Baseball_Classic>,
which is an international baseball tournament. Cuba was the runner up in
2006.

Are these other sports as popular as soccer? No. Can "poor" nations
compete in them? yes.

Are the tournaments and events that host these sports more popular than the
world cup? no. Do they exist? yes.

Finally, the original question was "What other sport is there where one of
the poorest nations in the world can defeat one of the richest?". It was
not, "What other sport is there, being played on such a grand stage, where
one of the poorest nations in the world can defeat one of the richest ?" It
has been sufficiently answered.
