order of early Clancy books:

Hunt for Red October 1984 (published btw by obscure
Naval Institute Press while Clancy was working selling
insurance!!)

Red Storm Rising 1986 (co-authored - Muslims from
southern USSR republics assault oil production
facilities, USSR attacks NATO prior to going after Saudi
oil.)

Patriot Games 1987 (IRA assault on British royal family)

Cardinal of the Kremlin 1988 - Russian vs. US laser
research on missle defense, etc. (interestingly, read
this while commuting in a vanpool to Lawrence Livermore
Lab. some van mates were phd's in the laser program!)

Clear and Present Danger 1989 - Columbian drug trade,
Washington intrigue.

Sum of all Fears 1991.
