I love the Bay Area. I came out for a conference in 1997 and completely fell in love with San Francisco. Moved here from Atlanta in 2005, lived in the city for a year, then moved to San Jose for two years, got really tired of the commute, so I moved to Alameda Island, which is just about as perfect a place to live as I have found on this earth. It has an old time small town feel, low crime, beautiful homes, parks, friendly people. It's only 12 miles from downtown San Francisco, but has none of the problems of city life. For the last few months, since my heart surgery, I've been staying in my partner's home in Marin County, which is also lovely. Cabin on Mount Tam with a billion dollar view of the mountains and the bay. Reminds me a lot of western North Carolina. But I cannot wait to get back to Alameda, and back to work in the city. Give me the best of both worlds.
The cost of living is steep, but salaries are also higher. The only places I would consider living other than here are the Outer Banks, or the west coast of England.
