"I listened to a NPR (maybe the BBC) bit on this tonight of all things - the thing is that many of the Brits think the whole "invasion of privacy" line is secondary to the benefits of having a police presence on every street corner."
I read a book recently that discusses some survey results. The surveys were issued in the US and in various European countries. The survey basically asked "Do you think your economic status will ever change for the better?" That is, can you move up the socio-economic ladder? The European results showed that over 70% of the people thought they would always be stuck where they are. No chance of improvement. If so, it explains why Europeans readily except socialism and intrusion in their lives. They have already excepted the nanny state. A little more intrusion into their private lives is no big deal. It's probably due to the class structure that is still inherent in European society. The equivalent of "He's acting above his station" is probably uttered a lot in Europe. The results in the US showed that 80% of the people believed they could move up the ladder. Many people in the US are still fiercely independent, even after a century of pressure by the progressive movement to force people to submit to a nanny state. It is due to American individualism, and dare I say it at the risk of offending some hyper sensitive readers, American exceptionalism. That has a lot to do with the revolt over full body grope fest and naked body scans now and the backlash against Obamacare.
