The big deal is that all gay servicemen and women do have to live in fear of
being kicked out. Now they can do things with their significant others
without fear of being rooted out and dishonorably discharged. They can be
themselves and stop living the lie that they are straight. I am also for
allowing women into combat roles...something else we lag behind the rest of
the world on...

Women are not intentionally put into combat situations, but since this is an
asymmetrical war (both Afghanistan and Iraq) there is no choice.
Women serve in support roles but those support people are in combat.
Regarding minorities, specifically someone of Islamic background, we don't
care. My last deployment we had an infantryman who was of Islamic descent
and he ended up being glued to our battalion commander because he spoke
Arabic. He would just listen to the interpreter talk to whomever he was
talking to and if he noticed any funny business he would point it out.
But this discussion is about DADT which I know has been tossed around before
because I responded to it. I'll not repeat myself though, just look through
the archives.
I will end with it doesn't matter what happens with DADT because you have
your fair share of homophobes who will harass and attack (verbally and
physically) anyone who is gay. But we all know this and the gays in the
military will treat this ruling as business as usual and still stay hidden.
The only difference now is that those few brave ones who do come out don't
have to worry about being kicked out. Now they just have to worry about
having their assess kicked by ignorance.
