After 9/11 the US instituted a number of requirements for banks to
verify the identity of anyone opening a bank account.  You may have to
show up in person, and may be required to show some form of US ID to
open the account.  I am not sure you have to show up in person at a US
branch though.  Might be able to find a local bank that has an
arrangement with a US bank to open accounts on their behalf.

That is just something I would look into, I am not entirely sure it's true.
