AFAIK it was a symbol favored and worn by King David, so called the Mogen David (Star of David). In fact, the "Red Cross" in Israel is <unofficially> called the Red Mogen David of Israel.
Yes, it's also called the Jewish Star. Don't know which is more "correct". Judith or Mikey?? Note: This is in spite of the fact that the International Committee of the Red Cross in Switzerland refuses to acknowledge anything but the Red Cross or the Red Crescent (Islamic) as official symbols of aid groups, and won't let Israel be a member. BTW it may be the Jewish Star, but it's not the principal symbol of Judaism - that's the Menorah. (Further nit picking: the candelabra used at Hanukkah for the festival of lights isn't truly a "Menorah" as it has more branches - it's a "Hanukkiah".) -Ben > Completely off this topic - I've always called the "Jewish Star" the Star of > David.
