Menorah = 7 branches. BTW the reason a Hanukkiah has 9 branches for the 8 days of Hanukkah is so there can be one candle for each day, plus a "helper" candle called the Shamash, with that branch a different height from the other 8, whose job is just to light the other ones.
So, the first night of Hanukkah you light the Shamash and use it to light one Hanukkah candle. Add a candle each night, so at the end you have 8 plus the helper. (It was felt that using one of the 8 to light the others wouldn't be right.) There have actually been arguments as to whether you add candles each night from right to left or left to right, and in which order you light them. Oy. -Ben > Wow, interesting...thanks.
