You should get as much RAM as reasonable. My upgrade to 16 GB RAM on my
laptop made running a Windows XP VM under VMWare really smooth.

As for Ubuntu, I love it myself, but it has some drawbacks for developers -
principally the lack of full development suites (CF Builder, FlashBuilder,
etc) on the platform. Other than that it kicks ass.
