I agree...I think we need more public transportation. I would love to dump
my car, but until non-urban areas get decent and usable public trans, that
will never be able to happen. Out in Aurora, IL, when I lived there, there
was a bus that went to the transportation center where you boarded the Metra
trains to go to downtown Chicago. This bus picked up about 2 houses down
from where I lived. The only problem was that they stopped running the bus
as 4pm...making it completely useless. There weren't any other busses that
ran anywhere near where I lived between 5-7pm, when most people coming in
from the city, would be arriving in Aurora. It's a 1-1 1hr 45min ride
depending on if you get an express train or a local. So if you figure
getting off work at 5 or 6pm, that is getting you out to Aurora at 6-7 pm.
Aurora is even a relative lower middle class to lower class community where
many rely on public transportation to get around. I also think more people
would use public trans if they had a decent system that could get them to
the placers they want to go. In some areas, this may not be feasible...like
in rural areas. Maybe the solution is for the government to really push
hard on AFVs and Eletric/Hybrid cars. What I would have loved to see is
instead of the cash for clunkers, how about a direct exchange of your gas
powered car for a hybrid or electric car. I would turn in my car for that
in a heartbeat.

budget cuts

Obama or no Obama, we're in deep and we can't just cut spending and dig our
way out. We are in a situation where, under the current system, we either:

1. keep going forward with the current plan, ultimately resulting in the
debasement of the dollar, leading to $15/gallon oil, or 2. dramatically cut
spending to balance the budget, resulting in misery for tens of millions of
gun-owning middle class Americans.

Both scenarios lead to the end of the car-centric American way of life. We
have to figure out an alternative and we have to figure it out now.
