It's because they can use it to rationalize their philosophy of being self-centered, selfish, greedy assholes.

In many ways, I've found Rand fans to be similar to Umberto Ecco fans: Few of them have actually read the books and those that have don't really know what to say about what they're read. I'm in the later category, except I'd never recommend Ecco. I have no idea what I read. But why is it that every person I've met that recommends Rand can never tell you why it's a great book? I bet at least 100 people have recommended Rand to me and I've asked every one why and none of them could give me any real answer. Then I read the books and now I know why: because they suck. What I don't get is why people keep trying to pretend they don't suck. Take His Dark Materials. The last book sucks. I loved the first one. Ender's Game. Great book! The others? They suck. 2063? It's sucks! Everyone pretty much agrees with all of this. Yet with Rand, people keep recommending it even though they refuse to say why. It's weird.
