What words would you use to describe a situation where your mental model of yourself and how other people interpreted your male/femaleness didn't square up with the physical plumbing?
There are many people out there where the mental/social component of their sexuality doesn't match up with their primary/secondary sexual characteristics which may or may not match up with their chromosomes. For that reason, we need to be able to linguistically distinguish between the different components. In the groups that tend to care about such things, the distinction usually comes between the words Gender and Sex. Other people may use different words for the distinction but I think you have to be able to make the distinction because it really exists.
